AI, Open Source & Tech Transfer Legal Strategist - Across Legal, Spain

Marcelo Estrella specialises in artificial intelligence, open-source innovation, and technology transfer.

As an associate in the IP/IT department at Across Legal, he concentrates in helping organizations—from research institutions to AI-driven startups—navigate the complexities of intellectual property (IP), data protection, and software licensing in an era defined by AI and digital transformation.

With a deep understanding of AI regulation, open-source governance, and data privacy, Marcelo has advised technology transfer offices and spinouts on structuring IP frameworks that foster innovation while ensuring compliance. He has played a pivotal role in licensing agreements and knowledge transfer strategies for leading institutions, including Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), and Université du Luxembourg. His expertise extends to advising AI research projects on data licensing, software compatibility, and ethical AI deployment.

Marcelo has been a key legal advisor for AI and open-source initiatives such as the Barcelona Supercomputing Center’s AINA project, where he provided guidance on AI regulation and data governance. He has also supported leading software business houses, in designing open-source policies and compliance frameworks for AI-powered solutions. His work ensures that AI-driven innovations can scale responsibly while leveraging open collaboration models.

Beyond legal advisory, Marcelo actively contributes to thought leadership in AI and IP. He co-authored the Handbook on Intellectual Property in Mobile Applications, published by WIPO in 2024, and has been a speaker at high-profile events, including the 2024 Vienna Workshop on FOSS-Based Business Models. His training sessions on AI-related IP, open-source compliance, and technology transfer strategies have helped organizations bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and market adoption.

Holding a law degree from the Universidad de Mendoza, along with specialized training in European Data Protection Law, Blockchain, and Legal-Tech, Marcelo brings a forward-thinking approach to AI-driven legal challenges. He loves working on legal frameworks that help AI researchers, developers, and technology transfer officers bring their groundbreaking ideas to life—making them practical, scalable, and ready to create real impact.
