Course overview

Many cities and regions hope to build knowledge-based economies but becoming the next ‘Silicon Valley’ is not straightforward. As key producers of research and development (R&D) and important ‘anchor’ institutions in their geography, universities are increasingly viewed by national policymakers as key players in innovation, industrial transformation and as a vital partner in transforming local economies, along with cities, regions and local government.

This course aims to identify the various elements that are needed to enable the creation of a successful innovation eco-system. Through examples from across Europe, delegates from universities and regional government will learn what works; the main challenges; and how to manage expectations and align the complicated interplay of disparate regional interests and priorities to achieve joint success.

University participants will gain an understanding of how creating a thriving innovation ecosystem can help them achieve core aims such as building research partnerships with industry; enhancing commercialisation programmes; supporting student and researcher-led spin-outs generating real world impact and even attracting higher quality students.

Why Join The course?

The course is aimed at people in universities with a responsibility for helping to drive economic success and who have been tasked with building long-term strategic economic and social initiatives and partnerships in their localities. It is likely that some delegates will be in Knowledge Transfer (KT) teams at universities and may already have some experience with regional projects and programmes but others may be looking to gain a more informed understanding of regional stakeholder engagement and regional innovation ecosystems. University delegates may also want to invite their colleagues in city or regional administration to build a shared understanding. Delegates are likely to have some experience of innovation processes and partnership between universities and regional government.
