Many academic groups and university medical centres identify new uses for existing medicines, but few of these discoveries reach patients. This session will help knowledge transfer professionals recognise promising opportunities and understand how a company can take them forward.

Using real cases, including Guanabenz (Amsterdam UMC, GuanaRep), we will cover:

  • What to look for in a repurposing opportunity: the unmet medical need, clinical and mechanistic evidence, regulatory pathway, viability of the business case, and signs that a project is ready, or not yet ready, for a venture.
  • How repurposing works in clinical practice: the path from academic proof of concept to protocol development, regulatory approval, clinical development and sustainable patient access.
  • How the Orfenix model works: how we support academic teams with protocol, regulatory and development work, and how we structure projects, create spin-outs and manage them as single-purpose ventures.
  • Examples: venture case studies that show how this approach works in practice.

The session will end with a Q&A.

This webinar is organised by the BioMedical SIG. Join the BioMedical SIG to stay informed.
