Dual licensing is becoming an increasingly relevant topic for universities seeking to combine open research and open-source software with sustainable commercialisation pathways.
During this session, we will explore how Knowledge Transfer Organisations (KTOs) are approaching dual licensing in practice. What interest do universities and their KTOs have in this model? What added value can it offer commercial licensees? And what experience has already been gained in implementing dual-licensing strategies?
The discussion will look at how university-developed software and digital platforms can remain openly accessible while also enabling commercial applications, and the questions this raises around IP ownership, licensing rights, governance and collaboration with commercial partners.
The round table will bring together Lluís Padró (UPC Barcelona), Christoph Fik (ETH Zurich) and Annemieke de Raad (University of Amsterdam), with Malcolm Bain (Across Legal) as moderator. Guest panellist Lluís Padró is a researcher at UPC and the creator of FreeLing, a successful dual-licensing platform, bringing first-hand experience of developing and implementing this model in a university setting.
Bringing together perspectives from university KTOs and market practice, the round table will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss where dual licensing can create value, and explore the practical and organisational challenges universities may encounter.
Rather than presenting a single prescribed model, the session aims to identify common challenges, promising approaches and opportunities for further collaboration within the ASTP community.
