The presentation will provide up-to-date guidance on the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and the U.S. Foreign Extortion Prevention Act (FEPA), including topics such as how and to what extent the FCPA applies to publicly funded or other research institutions in Europe, typical behaviours or situations that may raise concerns under the FCPA/FEPA, potential risks and consequences for European institutions in case of non-compliance, when employees of public research institutions may qualify as “foreign officials” under the FCPA, and practical approaches to operationalising compliance with U.S. anti-corruption laws in a university or research setting.
