Biotope is an early-stage investor and incubator focused on biotech innovations addressing planetary health challenges. Backed by VIB, the programme targets ventures that are often considered “too early” for traditional venture capital, combining funding with hands-on scientific and business support
Selected teams will take part in the Biotope Basecamp, a three-week hybrid programme designed to accelerate early biotech ventures towards investment readiness. The programme includes tailored workshops, one-to-one sessions with experts, and a final pitch to Biotope’s investment committee.
Successful participants receive:
€350,000 in investment and support
18 months of bespoke venture development support
A fast decision timeline, with around four months from application to investment decision
The next Basecamp will run from 5–28 May 2026 in a hybrid format (in-person in Ghent, Belgium, and online).
The opportunity is open to early-stage biotech startups that:
Address planetary health challenges (e.g. agrifood, biomanufacturing)
Have validated lab-scale innovations (TRL 3–5)
Are built on strong biotech foundations with IP potential
The programme is particularly relevant for university spin-outs and research-driven teams preparing for company formation or first external investment.
Application deadline: 28 February 2026
Programme dates: 5–28 May 2026
Format: Hybrid (Ghent + online)
Applications are now open via Biotope Ventures. Enquiries can also be directed to lore.devalck@vib.be
