Travel Thoughtfully: Small Gestures, Lasting Impressions

Now that we are halfway through the holiday season, we thought we would share a few recommendations for the ASTP community who enjoy travel as part of their personal and professional lives. When visiting a new culture, a little planning and consideration goes a long way toward making you a welcome guest.

It helps to do your research before you arrive. A quick look at local customs, such as dress codes, greetings, tipping, and sensitive topics, can spare you an awkward moment, since what feels natural at home may be perceived quite differently elsewhere. Take some time to learn a few key phrases; words like “hello,” “please,” and “thank you” in the local language are a simple but meaningful gesture of respect.

Observe before you engage. Notice how locals conduct themselves before assuming your usual habits apply. It is also important to be thoughtful about photography, taking particular care to respect people’s privacy, religious sites, and any locations marked off-limits. When you have the option, spend locally and support the local economy, especially in communities already feeling the strain of tourism.
