This framework converts the conflicting perspectives of the interaction between the exploitation of intellectual property rights (IPR) and OS into a concerted IP–OS approach1. This sets out to enable the pursuit of knowledge valorisation, operationalising the principle “as open as possible, as closed as necessary”, and documenting facilitators (approaches which support the synergy) and barriers (approaches which obstruct it).
