State aid law, particularly in the form of the EU framework for research and development, provides the legal framework for cooperation between the public sector and private actors. Universities and research institutes occupy a special position here, as they are considered to be companies within the meaning of state aid law and thus recipients of aid when it comes to research cooperation with private companies, but are also part of the public sector themselves and are therefore subject to state aid law. This means that particular attention must be paid to state aid rules when calculating project costs and drafting contracts.

This short workshop will describe the problems and current challenges, but also discuss possible solutions. Given the different ways in which the regulations are handled in the respective EU Member States, exciting discussions are to be expected.
