Tea with ASTP : Where are the female spin-out founders?

As KTO professionals we are probably all very aware that the number of female founders of spin-outs lags behind the number of male spin-out founders

In the UK, research shows that 17% of active spin-outs have at least one female founder, and only 7% have all female founders compared to 75.5% of spin-outs with all-male founders. We can probably all agree that women are not less entrepreneurial than men. So how do we get more women entrepreneurs? As KTOs, what can we do to remove the barriers (existing or perceived) that might exist to get a more equal spin-out founder representation at our research institutions?

In this Tea with ASTP, Professor Simonetta Manfredi, Director of Research, Innovation and Enterprise at Oxford Brookes University, will talk about research she and her team have conducted into female entrepreneurship. Simonetta will base her talk on the findings in the publications “The Spin-out Journey: Barriers and Enablers to Gender Inclusive Innovation”, and "Academic Entrepreneurship: Early Career Researchers Perspective" (both publications can be accessed under Women and Spinouts: A Case for Action at Oxford Brookes University Research Reports).

These publications are part of a wider project funded by the EPSRC’s Inclusion Matters initiative, looking at the participation of women scientists, engineers and mathematicians in university spinout companies.
