Knowledge and technology transfer (KTT) is a vital part of the “third mission” of universities and public research organisations, underpinning innovation, economic growth, and societal wellbeing. To improve how these contributions are measured, ASTP’s NAAC Working Group on KPI Metrics and Impact has published the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Metrics Report (2025) — a comprehensive overview of current frameworks and a call for greater harmonisation across Europe.
In this Tea with ASTP session, the report’s authors will discuss why meaningful KTT metrics matter, the limitations of existing national and international data collections, and the need to capture a broader range of activities beyond patents and licensing. They will introduce the “KTT Metrics Cube,” a multidimensional model that incorporates activities, value chains, and institutional boundaries to offer a more holistic view of KTT performance.
The conversation will explore key findings from 19 national surveys, highlight inconsistencies in definitions and indicators, and outline practical pathways toward a more coherent European approach. Participants will gain insight into how shared definitions, balanced inputs–outputs–impacts, and coordinated data collection can strengthen evidence-based policymaking and better reflect the true value of KTT to society.
